AI Is Changing the Way We Work and Learn—Here’s What You Should Know

Remember when having an email address made you look technologically advanced? Some of us still remember when someone would proudly announce, “I have email!”
Then came smartphones. Then social media. Then Zoom meetings, where millions of intelligent adults simultaneously discovered the sentence: “You’re on mute.”
Now another technological shift has arrived: Artificial Intelligence.
Unlike some technological trends that disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived, AI is rapidly becoming part of education, business, healthcare, communication, research, customer service, marketing, and everyday life.
That raises an important question: Should ordinary working people actually learn AI, or is this something best left to computer experts?
The answer may be much simpler—and more encouraging—than you think.
AI Is Not Just for “Computer People”
When people hear Artificial Intelligence, they sometimes imagine programmers sitting in dark rooms surrounded by six computer monitors, typing mysterious code while surviving exclusively on coffee.
But today's AI tools are increasingly designed for ordinary people.
Teachers can use AI to develop lesson ideas. Small-business owners can brainstorm advertisements and organize information. Students can use it to understand difficult concepts. Office workers can summarize information, organize projects, analyze data, and improve presentations.
Ministry leaders can use AI to organize research, while still recognizing that technology should never replace prayer, biblical study, discernment, responsible scholarship, or the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
The important question is becoming less “Will I ever use AI?” and more “Will I know how to use it wisely when I need it?”
One of AI's Greatest Benefits: Time
Imagine spending two hours staring at a blank page trying to begin a report. AI may help you create an initial structure in minutes.
Have 40 pages of information to organize? AI can help identify themes. Need ten ideas for an event? Instead of staring at the ceiling waiting for inspiration to descend, AI can help you brainstorm.
This doesn't mean AI should do all your thinking.
Think of it like a calculator. A calculator is extremely useful, but you still need enough mathematical understanding to recognize when the calculator gives you an answer that makes absolutely no sense.
AI is similar. It can accelerate human work. It should not eliminate human judgment.
But AI Can Be Brilliantly Wrong
Here is where things get interesting.
AI can sometimes give you an answer that sounds as confident as a professor and reads as smoothly as a textbook—and still be wrong.
That's important because incorrect information does not always arrive wearing a sign that says: “WARNING: I JUST MADE THIS UP.”
AI systems can produce inaccurate information, misunderstand questions, reflect biases, or present incomplete information. That means learning AI must also include learning how to question AI.
Ask yourself: Where did this information come from? Can I verify it? Is the source reliable? Is this information current? What perspective might be missing?
And perhaps the most important question is: Am I using AI to assist my thinking—or to avoid thinking?
AI Should Strengthen Our Thinking, Not Replace It
Suppose every time we encounter a difficult question, we immediately ask AI to think for us.
Every essay. Every decision. Every calculation. Every idea. Every problem.
Eventually, we could become very efficient at producing answers while becoming less capable of developing answers ourselves.
That would be a terrible bargain.
Education has never simply been about possessing information. Education teaches us how to think.
The goal, therefore, should not be AI instead of intelligence. It should be AI working alongside human intelligence.
Use AI to challenge your thinking, expand your possibilities, save time, identify gaps, and explore ideas—but don't surrender your mind to it.
What About AI and the Workplace?
This is probably the question many working adults are quietly asking: “How will AI affect what I do?”
Some jobs and responsibilities will undoubtedly change as AI becomes more capable. Certain repetitive activities can increasingly be automated. At the same time, technological change can create new responsibilities, specialties, businesses, and opportunities.
Years ago, knowing Microsoft Word, Excel, email, and online research became valuable workplace skills. AI literacy may increasingly join that list.
A person who learns to combine professional experience + human judgment + communication skills + AI competence may be well prepared for the changing workplace.
You don't necessarily need to become an AI engineer.
You may simply need to become AI literate.
Five Things You Can Do This Week
1. Spend 15 minutes a day experimenting with AI. Ask an AI tool to explain something you already understand. Because you know the subject, you can evaluate whether its answer is accurate.
2. Learn how to give AI better instructions. AI responds to what is commonly called a prompt. Compare “Tell me about budgeting” with “Explain five practical budgeting strategies for a working family trying to reduce monthly expenses. Use simple language and give an example.” Better instructions generally produce better results.
3. Verify important information. Never assume that because AI said something confidently, it must be true. For academic, financial, legal, medical, theological, or professional matters, verification is especially important.
4. Protect private information. Don't casually enter passwords, confidential student records, private client information, financial data, or sensitive organizational documents into an AI system.
5. Choose one real problem AI can help you solve. Don't try to “master AI” this weekend. Instead, ask yourself: What is one repetitive task in my life that takes too much time? Start there.
The Bigger Question
Every generation faces technologies that initially feel strange.
The telephone was strange. Television was strange. Personal computers were strange. The Internet was strange. Smartphones were strange.
Today, we casually carry devices in our pockets that would have seemed extraordinary to previous generations.
AI will continue changing too.
So perhaps the most important question isn't whether we should be afraid of AI or impressed by AI. Perhaps it is:
What kind of human beings will we become while using it?
Will technology make us more knowledgeable but less wise? Faster but less thoughtful? More productive but less creative? More connected digitally but less connected personally?
Or can we learn to use powerful technology while preserving the qualities no machine should replace—wisdom, compassion, integrity, creativity, discernment, faith, and human connection?
That conversation is only beginning.

Then ask yourself three questions: Did it save me time? Did I verify what it told me? Did it strengthen my thinking—or replace it?

How does online learning work? Learning management systems (LMS) provide an accessible exchange of information between professors and students. Τhis way, students can view learning material at their leisure or even attend scheduled conferences or lectures.
Concerning test-taking, learners can submit course assignments through the LMS, participate in a discussion, or submit other tasks. Lastly, professors may provide feedback to the student through comments or emails when using this LMS.
